Grade 1 Social Studies at The Learning Den invites young learners to begin thinking about their role in the world. This subject serves as an introduction to understanding people, places, and the ways we live and work together in communities. Students begin with the most familiar — themselves and their families — and gradually expand their understanding to include neighborhoods, schools, and cities. This helps build a strong foundation of self-awareness and social responsibility.
Throughout the year, students learn to identify and describe the roles of family members, teachers, community helpers, and leaders. They explore why rules are important and how people work together to make a community safe, fair, and happy. They are introduced to concepts such as respect, responsibility, sharing, and cooperation. These values are not only taught through stories and discussions but are also experienced through activities that encourage teamwork and empathy.
Learners also begin exploring basic geography by identifying simple maps, understanding cardinal directions (north, south, east, west), and recognizing familiar landforms and landmarks. They develop an appreciation for diversity by learning about different cultures, languages, foods, holidays, and traditions from around the world. National identity is introduced through the study of symbols like the flag, anthem, and local heroes.
By the end of Grade 1, students will have gained essential skills in observation, comparison, communication, and responsible citizenship — preparing them to be thoughtful, respectful members of society.
